1.4 Million Orphans in Egypt Alone — The System Needs Transformation
UNICEF estimates 140 million children globally live without parental care. Most are in institutions, even though family-based care produces far better outcomes.
Africa carries one of the heaviest burdens of the child care crisis. Egypt, at its heart, shoulders responsibility for the MENA region’s largest orphan population.
Many leave care at 18 with no family support, no savings, and no preparation. Sanad works to change this from the root.
We don’t just support individual children — we transform the entire alternative care ecosystem: developing care homes, empowering caregivers, facilitating Kafala, and preparing youth for life after care.

Our work focuses on strengthening the family-based care system by equipping families applying for kafala and fostering with the knowledge and psychological preparation they need, and by activating close follow-up mechanisms that ensure the child’s stability and prevent the risk of returning to care homes. Because our vision extends to the future, we work centrally on providing safety nets and empowering our care-leaver youth to build stable families of their own, protecting their children (the second generation) and breaking the cycle of alternative care across generations.

In this pillar, we focus on developing and activating care quality standards and institutionalizing strict safeguarding policies that guarantee an environment free from any harm. Our work ranges from genuinely raising the quality of semi-family care inside care homes to advocating for the development of the governing legislation, while establishing clear complaint channels and raising awareness of them, to build a system defined by transparency, accountability and safety.

That is why we invest heavily in empowering the alternative care workforce, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to raise a psychologically and socially healthy generation. Empowerment extends to the wider community: we work with schools, employers and private sector entities so they become active partners able to provide nurturing environments and equal opportunities. At the heart of this supportive system, we also direct our energy to empowering children and young people, building their self-confidence and giving them space to dream and achieve their ambitions, so they go out into society as active, independent citizens able to shape their own future.
